My Story

My Story

In 2019 I decided to return to studying and started an NC in Jewellery and Silversmithing at the UHI North, West and Hebrides after being a stay-at-home mum for several years. After I completed the NC, I continued and completed a HNC in Jewellery and Silversmithing in 2021. The two courses fed my creativity and with my family care demands, going self-employed was the best fit for my life.

Loch Sealg Designs is my small business, named after the sea Loch in Lemreway where my wee workshop is based and looks over. In Scottish Gaelic Sealg (Sh-el-ag), means Hunt. Loch Sealg is a sea loch on the east coast of Lewis and has views over to the Isle of Harris, Shiant Isles, mainland Scotland and the Isle of Skye.

My inspiration comes directly from the rugged, wild beauty of the Outer Hebrides. The ever-changing light over the Lochs, sea, the coastline and the natural elements, I try to capture all of them in my work. Every wave, stone or petal you see is a piece of this landscape made real in silver and/or gold.

Each piece of jewellery is handmade, ensuring that every item is unique. I take great pride in using recycled metals, primarily 925 Sterling Silver, to create beautiful, sustainable unique designs for my clients.

The process is a labour of true love. It begins with a plain sheet, wire or tube of recycled 925 silver or recycled gold, which I transform using traditional techniques with my tools and hands right here in my wee island workshop. This ensures that when you wear a Loch Sealg Designs piece, you are wearing something unique and created with intention, love and care.

Choosing recycled materials and creating something unique is central to my ethos. It’s my small way of helping protect this precious environment while offering you a unique, high-quality alternative to mass-produced jewellery.

The majority of my work is hallmarked by Edinburgh Assay Office, this is a legal requirement for items over 7.78 grams for silver and 1 gram for gold, this gives reassurance to you of the quality of the precious metal used within my work.
